Face of SLO County DA’s Office set to change

SHEA NOT SEEKING FIFTH TERM; DOW ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY.

For nearly 40 years, Gerry Shea served in the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s office, the last 15 as its top boss. Those days are coming to an end in January 2015.

And even though the election is six months away, at least one candidate has announced he intends to try to fill Shea’s sizable shoes.

On Tuesday, Deputy District Attorney Dan Dow was the first to announce his intentions to be on the June 2014 ballot, gathering with close to 100 supporters on the steps of the venerable county courthouse.

Shea’s announcement came on Monday, saying that after four terms as the county’s top prosecutor and 37 in the department, he would not run in the June 2014 election. He said he had thought about running for another term, but decided it was time to spend more time with his family and he wanted to give ample notice of his intentions.

“I decided it was time to entrust the stewardship of the office to somebody else,” he said.
