Dan Dow Receives John L. Seitz Community Service Award

San Luis Obispo, CA – The San Luis Obispo Bar Association recently presented Dan Dow with the John L. Seitz Award for Community Service. A veteran and Deputy District Attorney of eight years, Dow is running to replace District Attorney Gerry Shea who will retire next year after more than 15 years in office.

“Dan is the first person from the District Attorney’s office so honored since the inception of the award nearly twenty years ago,” said Tana Coates, President for the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association. “He joins a distinguished list of jurists and attorneys previously recognized for their dedication and service to the legal profession and the residents of the Central Coast.”

The Seitz Award recognizes those lawyers whose community contributions exemplify the best attributes of the legal profession.  The award is generously funded by the Seitz family, and is named for John L. Seitz, a long time San Luis Obispo County Attorney.  The award includes a donation of $1,000 made to the charity of the recipient’s selection. Dow has selected the Central Coast Chapter of Honor Flight as the recipient of the $1,000 donation. Honor Flight is an organization dedicated to sending Veterans of WWII to see the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.

“It is an honor to receive the John L. Seitz award from the SLO County Bar Association,” said Dow. “To be counted among the other recipients of this award, who have each given so much to our community, is very humbling.”

Ironically, Dow and Seitz both graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law which states its mission is to educate its students to become lawyers of competence, conscience, and compassion. Seitz was a long time San Luis Obispo County Attorney who was dedicated to local government law in the region. He represented special districts for years.

“Dan’s global view of the justice system provides a great service to our community,” said local attorney Jeff Radding. “His work to improve the justice system by establishing a veterans court is what earned him this recognition.”

Dow is an Army Veteran, still serving as an Army Major, Command Judge Advocate, reserve status. He was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and to Kosovo under Operation Enduring Freedom. Dow broadened his experience as a prosecutor by prosecuting Courts-Martial while in Iraq. He brings his extensive experience to the courtrooms of San Luis Obispo County.  Now as a Deputy District Attorney, Dow specializes in the prosecution of predators who commit crimes of child molestation and abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence.

Dow’s commitment to serve goes further than just the courtroom. As a dedicated father, Dan knows how important it is to provide for his family and ensure their security. Now, Dan Dow is committed to providing the same security for our residents, families, and business owners as the next District Attorney for San Luis Obispo County.

Dan and his wife Wendy, a local small business owner and reading instructor, have been married for 21 years. They have two children, Chloe, age 8 and Jedidiah, age 6.
