Veteran and Community Leader will run for District Attorney

San Luis Obispo, CA –
Veteran and Deputy District Attorney, Dan Dow will run for San Luis Obispo County District Attorney. As District Attorney Shea recently announced that he would not be seeking re-election, Dow will look to use his dedication to law enforcement and his commitment to the safety of both residents and local communities as the next District Attorney.

“I have dedicated my life to both country and community, and now as a candidate for District Attorney, I want to further my commitment to the safety of our region,” said Dow when asked about his decision to run. He added, “I am proud of the work that I have done in the courtroom, and I will continue to be a leader for our community.”

Shortly after graduating from high school Dan joined the United States Army where he adapted quickly and enjoyed serving his Country. Dan attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California where he was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate, attaining a Korean Linguistic Certification, and earning the Martin J. Kellogg Award for his exceptional achievement in understanding of a foreign culture.

Since attaining his law degree at Santa Clara University, Dan has served as a Major, Command Judge Advocate in the California Army National Guard, where he was deployed to Iraq for both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn, as well as Kosovo under Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Dan will bring a lifetime of experience to the role serving as District Attorney,” said former Atascadero Mayor and retired Navy Pilot Ray Johnson. “Dan’s legal experience, his commitment to creating a Veteran’s Court, and his service to our country make him the clear choice for our next District Attorney.”

As a Deputy District Attorney, Dan has focused on prosecuting domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse crimes including homicide where he seeks to bring justice for victims of crimes that are committed against those least capable of protecting themselves. He considers it a high calling and a privilege to serve Victims and to hold those offenders accountable for their actions.

“Dan Dow is an exceptional attorney and will make an excellent District Attorney for San Luis Obispo County,” said fellow San Luis Obispo County Deputy District Attorney Andy Cadena. “He is the right person to serve in this role for the next four years.”

Dan’s commitment to community service has gone far beyond the courtroom. He regularly speaks at Women’s Shelters and events, seeking to provide both financial and emotional support to victims of the crimes he prosecutes. As a Veteran, Dan is proud to have played an integral role in bringing the Veterans Treatment Court to San Luis Obispo County. Since its inception in June, the Court seeks to address the growing number of veterans entering the criminal justice system as a result of traumatic experiences they endured while in the military.

Dan and his wife Wendy, a local small business owner and reading instructor, have been married for 21 years. They have two children, Chloe, age 8 and Jedidiah, age 6.
